This series came out of a conversation I was having with my mentor, David Cruz, who looked around my studio and noticed that I surrounded myself with patterns and graphics—many of which came from souvenirs I crammed onto my studio from countries I had visited. “Why don’t you use these in your work?” was his question. So I conceived of this idea of these Greek-Tragedy-Portraits, taking the likeness and the tragic stories of the gay men I have known and loved and using them to create sort of modern-day-Greek-urn-story-telling. I also wanted to change my materials and so painted these on wood with acrylic.
